How to use the fraction to decimal calculator
- Type the numerator (top) and denominator (bottom). Tick Mixed number for values like 2 3/8.
- Keep Exact decimal to see repeating digits with a bar, or choose how many decimal places to round to.
- Press Convert to see the long division worked out digit by digit.
How to convert a fraction to a decimal
A fraction is a division: 3/8 means 3 ÷ 8. Divide the numerator by the denominator with long division:
- 8 goes into 3 zero times – write 0 and a decimal point; the remainder is 3.
- Add a 0: 30 ÷ 8 = 3, remainder 6.
- 60 ÷ 8 = 7, remainder 4. Then 40 ÷ 8 = 5, remainder 0 – done.
\frac{3}{8} = 3 \div 8 = 0.375Shortcut: when the denominator can be made 10, 100 or 1000, multiply the top and bottom by the same number: 3/8 = 375/1000 = 0.375, 7/20 = 35/100 = 0.35.
Terminating and repeating decimals
A fraction in simplest form gives a decimal that ends only when its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5 (2, 4, 5, 8, 10, 16, 20, 25…). Any other denominator gives a repeating decimal: a remainder comes back, so the digits start over. A bar marks the digits that repeat:
\frac{1}{3} = 0.\overline{3} \qquad \frac{1}{6} = 0.1\overline{6} \qquad \frac{1}{7} = 0.\overline{142857}Fraction to decimal chart

Frequently asked questions
How do you convert a fraction to a decimal?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. 5/8 = 5 ÷ 8 = 0.625.
What is 1/3 as a decimal?
0.333… with the 3 repeating forever, written 0.3 with a bar over the 3. Rounded to two places it is 0.33.
Why do some fractions give repeating decimals?
In long division a remainder eventually comes back, and from then on the same digits repeat. This happens whenever the simplified denominator has a prime factor other than 2 or 5.
How do I convert a mixed number to a decimal?
Keep the whole number and convert only the fraction: 2 3/4 = 2 + 0.75 = 2.75.
What is 3/8 as a decimal?
0.375. Three eighths is 3 ÷ 8, or 375/1000.
How do I turn the decimal into a percent?
Multiply by 100: 0.375 = 37.5%.
