How to use the calculator
Type the whole number in the left box and the fraction in the stacked boxes, then press Convert. The answer shows the improper fraction, its simplest form and every step.
How to change a mixed number to an improper fraction
- Multiply the whole number by the denominator.
- Add the numerator.
- Put the result over the same denominator.
a\frac{b}{c} = \frac{a \times c + b}{c}Example: 3 2/5. Three wholes are 15 fifths; add 2 more fifths.
3\frac{2}{5} = \frac{3 \times 5 + 2}{5} = \frac{17}{5}Why it works: each whole contains c parts of size 1/c, so a wholes contain a × c of them, plus the b parts of the fraction.
Negative mixed numbers
−2 1/3 means −(2 + 1/3), so convert 2 1/3 and keep the minus sign: −7/3. Do not work it out as −2 + 1/3, which is −5/3.
When to use improper fractions
Change mixed numbers to improper fractions before you multiply or divide, and when adding or subtracting gets awkward (borrowing). The mixed number calculator does this for you and shows each step; improper fraction to mixed number goes the other way.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert a mixed number to an improper fraction?
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator and keep the denominator: 2 3/4 = (2 × 4 + 3)/4 = 11/4.
What is 1 1/2 as an improper fraction?
3/2: one whole is 2 halves, plus 1 half makes 3 halves.
Does the denominator change?
No. The denominator stays the same; only the numerator changes.
How do I convert a negative mixed number?
Convert it as a positive number and put the minus sign in front: −3 1/4 = −13/4.
Why do I need improper fractions?
They make multiplying and dividing fractions straightforward, and avoid borrowing when subtracting mixed numbers.
