How to use the PPF calculator

  1. Enter how much you will deposit each year – between ₹500 and ₹1,50,000.
  2. The interest rate starts at the current PPF rate (7.1% for October–December 2026).
  3. Choose the period: 15 years to maturity, or longer if you extend in blocks of 5 years.

How PPF interest works

Interest is worked out every month on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of the month, and credited once a year on 31 March. Depositing the whole year’s amount by 5 April earns interest for the full year – the calculator assumes this.

\text{Maturity} = A \times \dfrac{(1 + r)^{n} - 1}{r} \times (1 + r)
  • A – yearly deposit, r – yearly rate as a decimal, n – number of years
Example: ₹1,50,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1%

Deposited ₹22,50,000; maturity value ₹40,68,209, of which ₹18,18,209 is tax-free interest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current PPF interest rate?

7.1% a year for October–December 2026. The government reviews it every quarter.

How much will ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF become in 15 years?

About ₹40.68 lakh at 7.1% – ₹22.5 lakh deposited and about ₹18.18 lakh in tax-free interest.

When should I deposit in PPF?

By 5 April each year. Interest is calculated on the lowest balance after the 5th of each month, so an early deposit earns interest for all 12 months.

Can I extend PPF after 15 years?

Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without new deposits. Apply within a year of maturity to extend with deposits.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF is EEE: deposits qualify for Section 80C (old regime), and both the interest and the maturity amount are tax-free.
